The Hong Kong Prize is one of Asia’s premier science awards that celebrates researchers and their discoveries, while encouraging young scientists to pursue careers in scientific research. Winners receive both a monetary award and the opportunity to conduct their research in some of Asia’s premier science facilities.
For this year’s awards, the judges have narrowed the field of nominees down to six people who are dedicated to upholding human rights and social progress in their communities. The final winner will be announced early 2024. The winner will also have the chance to access premier research facilities and attend international conferences relevant to their fields of study.
This year, the theme of the HK Prize is diversity, equity and inclusion. The artists selected for the exhibition will interpret this concept in various ways – from international displacement to labour migration, and from climate change to feminism. The works will showcase how artists can create meaningful art that explores diversity issues and communicates them to the world.
In a letter accompanying their nomination, five University of California Riverside professors wrote that they hoped the prize would send a message of support to activists fighting for freedom in Hong Kong. They compared them to other Nobel Peace Prize winners who have faced similar hardships, including Hitler critic Carl von Ossietzky, Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov and Polish politician Lech Walesa. The prize could further “underscore the highest moral aspirations of humanity.”
The winners of HK Prize will be honored at an awards ceremony in early 2024. In addition to the monetary award, the winners will have the opportunity to visit some of Hong Kong’s top research facilities and meet leading scientists from diverse disciplines. The judging process will be conducted by an interdisciplinary panel of experts with varied experiences and backgrounds.
To qualify for the hk prize, applicants must submit research articles in their fields of expertise.
