The Sidney Prize, or the Sidney Award, is awarded to journalists each month for work that is published in an American newspaper, magazine, or blog. In addition to publishing the winner’s name, the foundation also offers $500 honorarium and a certificate to the winner.
The prize, which was previously known as the Sidney Lanier Prize, honors writers who have devoted considerable time to writing about the South. The foundation also awards the Heather Dawn Reynolds Equity Award, which recognizes commitment to diversity.
This year, the judges selected eight short stories from over 500 entries. The winner is a young woman named Jenah Shaw. Her story, about a new woman in town, will appear in Overland, a literary journal.
Other winners include Elisbeth Passmore, who won Postcard from Nowheresville, a book about a young girl who moves to a new town with her family. George Haddad, who wrote a novel, won the Viva La Novella competition, which explores the limitations of language.
This year’s awards are sponsored by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation. The foundation, which was founded in 2007, supports writers and writers’ organizations. The foundation sponsors a $500 honorarium and a bottle of union-made wine.
Another prize, the Thomas Robinson Prize, is awarded to a writer for work that extends the scope of writing about the South. The award was previously called the Sidney Lanier Prize, and is currently named after a former student of Sidney Lanier. Since its inception, the prize has been awarded to several notable writers.
The Hillman Prizes, on the other hand, are awarded every spring. They are open to all journalists, including those in the United States, and are for investigative journalism in service of the common good. All submissions are accepted by the foundation. There are a few rules to follow to qualify. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and they must have written articles or essays for publication on a U.S. news website or blog.
Sidney Award recipients are chosen on the basis of the quality of their work. For example, the judges of the Sidney award often look at the journalist’s ability to report on issues of social justice and economic injustice. Additionally, their work must be written in a style that is accessible to an American audience.
If you would like to enter the prize, you can visit the website for instructions. You can enter the contest by writing a short story, poem, or essay that is about 3000 words or shorter. Entries must be received by March 15th to be considered. Those who enter will receive a special subscriber rate.
This is just a sampling of the many awards and prizes that the Sidney award has to offer. There is also the Milton and Anne Sidney Prize, which is given to graduating DNP students, and the Sidney Cox Prize, which is given to an undergraduate student for the best written writing. The list continues to grow, and it is well worth checking out.
