The AJL Prizes for Student Writing

0 Comments 12:32 PM

Across the country and around the world, students are using their voices to change our world for the better. They’re making a difference by addressing the most pressing social and environmental issues of our time. Their work reflects a diversity of perspectives and backgrounds. But they all share one thing: the courage to speak up.

AJL is proud to award these outstanding student writers with a variety of prize awards. Winners and runners-up receive a cash prize, plus their work will be published in our autumn issue. To submit a story for consideration, please see the submission guidelines below.

Each year, the Sydney Prize honors leading global voices who promote peace with justice and human rights. Past winners include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mary Robinson and the Black Lives Matter Global Network. Help us support this important work by donating to the Sydney Prize.

The Sydney Prize for Undergraduate Writing is awarded annually to that piece of undergraduate writing “which, in the opinion of the Committee, most nearly meets those high standards of originality and integrity which Sidney Cox exercised both for himself and his students.” The judging Committee consists of a number of Hanover members. The Committee aims to make its decision by early spring.

This prize is awarded in memory of the late Professor Sidney A. Cox, a distinguished historian of technology and a founding member of the Society for the History of Science and Technology (SHOT). It recognizes that undergraduate research in the humanities is as valuable as that in the natural sciences and social studies, and that such research contributes to a better understanding of our culture and our environment.

In recognition of the pioneering contributions to consumer culture theory by Sidney Levy, this prize is awarded in his name to the best article based on a dissertation in the field of CCT that has been published during the previous year. The prize includes a monetary award and recognition at the annual CCT conference luncheon.

Founded in 2000, this prize celebrates the legacy of Sidney E. Iwanter, a Madison native who was inspired by his own curiosity to record the lectures of Professor of History Harvey Goldberg and later donated these “bootlegs” to UW-Madison. The prize honors the passing of intellectual curiosity from one generation to another.
