The prize winner will be honoured at an awards ceremony in Singapore later this year, and receive a certificate and a medallion, sponsored by Temasek Foundation. The winner will also deliver a keynote lecture at the inaugural Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2024, to be held at Singapore International Water Week in June.
The Singapore Literature Prize is a biennial literary award given to the best work of literature written by a resident of Singapore in any of the island state’s languages – Tamil, Malay, Chinese, and English. The 2022 edition of the prize was announced tonight (August 25) at a gala event at Victoria Theatre. It awarded 12 winners out of 43 shortlisted works in the different categories.
The 2024 Prize will be presented to a person or team that has made outstanding scientific achievements in the field of water and a contribution to the understanding of the importance of water in sustainable development. The Prize will be awarded by an independent Prize Panel of five (5) judges appointed by the President of NUS. The criteria and mechanism for selection of a Prize winner in a particular three year cycle will be determined by the judges, and will be announced together with a closing nomination date at least a year in advance of the prize being awarded.
Professor Gertjan Medema, Principal Microbiologist at KWR Water Research Institute and a world leader in the area of water quality and health, will be honoured at an awards ceremony in June, to receive the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2024. Medema has pioneered the application of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) to detect viruses in drinking water. This technique has been critical in the detection and management of the Covid-19 pandemic, and is expected to have a significant impact on global public health.
This year’s Singapore Prize is a part of the new Earthshot Week, an initiative that will see global leaders and businesses convene in Singapore to accelerate the solutions of the winners and finalists of this year’s Prize and bring about tangible action to repair the planet. It will be marked by a series of special events, including local activations for the public to participate in.

In this round of consumer voting, over 4,000 readers have voted for their favourite books in the four categories: novels, nonfiction, poetry and children’s books.
