Data sgp (Student Growth Percentile) is a tool that can be used to analyze data to produce student growth projections. Using the SGP package, one can run fixed-time and time-dependent student growth analyses. It allows users to aggregate student level growth and achievement data for analysis.

The SGP package contains four exemplar data sets. The first, sgpData, is a wide-format data set utilized by the lower level functions studentGrowthPercentiles and studentGrowthProjections. The second, sgpData_LONG, is a LONG formatted data set used for operational SGP analyses. The third, sgpData_INSTRUCTOR_NUMBER, is a look up table that enables the production of teacher level summaries.

sgpData has seven required variables: VALID_CASE, CONTENT_AREA, YEAR, ID, SCALE_SCORE, GRADE and ACHIEVEMENT_LEVEL (on required if running student growth projections). Other than these, there are demographic/student categorization variables that allow for creation of student aggregates by the summarizeSGP function.

In general, deciding whether to use sgpData or other wide-format data with the SGP package is a decision that should be driven by several factors including: your current data setup, the number of years of student data you plan to use and the types of analyses you intend to run. However, in most cases, using sgpData with the SGP package is straight forward.

For all but the most basic, one-off, SGP analyses, sgpData is likely to be the preferred data format. It is also much easier to prepare and store as compared to sgpData_LONG.

The sgpData package provides an exemplary data set for user set-up and production of SGP analyses. sgpData is a wide-format data set that can be easily formatted to be used by the lower level functions studentGrowthPercentiles, studentGrowthProjections and other wrapper functions in the SGP package.

It can be useful for many types of SGP analyses but is particularly effective in producing operational student growth projections. It can also be very effective in creating a number of other analyses, including: teacher and principal level student achievement plots, student aggregates, racial achievement and other student growth measures.

This is because it contains an identifier for each student, the scale scores associated with them over 5 years and other relevant variables. In addition, it includes a student-instructor look up table that can be used to create teacher level student growth and achievement plots and other operational SGP analyses.

If you are interested in running SGP analyses and want to learn more about sgpData, please consult the SGP data analysis vignette. If you have any questions about sgpData or wide-format data in general, contact the SGP package team directly.

The SGP package contains four exemplar data set formats. These include sgpData, sgpData_LONG, sgpData_INSTRUCTOR_NUMBER and sgptData_LONG. All of these exemplar data sets are available to download from the SGP package.
